The Casino de Monte-Carlo
The Casino de Monte-Carlo is the iconic gaming venue — a Charles Garnier-designed building (same architect as the Paris Opéra) opening onto Place du Casino. It remains one of the world's most beautiful gaming rooms. Entrance requires passport or national ID, and a strict dress code (jacket recommended after 8pm; no sportswear, shorts, or flip-flops).
There is an entrance fee (typically €10–17) for the main gaming rooms. Monaco residents are actually restricted from entering the casino — a quirk of local law designed to preserve it as a tourist destination.
Travel Tips
- Dress the part. Monte Carlo is the rare casino destination where a blazer or cocktail dress is genuinely appreciated. Daytime is smart-casual; evenings at the casino and fine dining call for elevated attire.
- Getting around: Monaco is tiny (2 km²). Most hotels and attractions are within a 15-minute walk. Public elevators and escalators connect the different levels of the principality (it's built on a cliff). Taxis are expensive; buses are €2.
- Budget warning: Monaco is one of the world's most expensive destinations. A coffee can cost €8, a simple dinner €80+. Consider staying in nearby Menton or Ventimiglia (Italy) and visiting Monaco for the day.
- Grand Prix weekend (late May): Accommodation triples or quadruples in price. Book 6+ months ahead if attending — or avoid entirely if you're not interested in F1.
- Heli transfer from Nice airport: €140–160 one way. Dramatic arrival along the coastline; takes 7 minutes vs. 45 by road.
- Tax-free shopping: Monaco has no income tax and luxury boutiques line Avenue Monte-Carlo and the Métropole shopping center.
Beyond the Casino
- Prince's Palace of Monaco — Official residence of the Grimaldi family. Changing of the guard daily at 11:55am. State apartments open June–October.
- Oceanographic Museum — Spectacular clifftop aquarium and marine museum, formerly directed by Jacques Cousteau.
- Exotic Garden (Jardin Exotique) — Lush succulent garden on a cliffside with cave tours and views over Monaco and the French Riviera.
- Larvotto Beach — Monaco's main public beach, free to access. The only gravel beach in the area; water shoes recommended.
- Circuit de Monaco — Walk the famous F1 Grand Prix course year-round. Start at Sainte Dévote corner, follow the harbor front through the tunnel to the chicane.
- Japanese Garden — Serene landscaped garden designed by landscape architect Yasuo Beppu, near the Grimaldi Forum.
- Day trip to Èze — A stunning medieval perched village 30 minutes away, with cobbled streets and Jardin Exotique views.
- Day trip to Italy — Ventimiglia and Sanremo are 45 minutes by train. The Sanremo Casino is a charming Italian alternative.
