Casino Cosmopol Stockholm
Casino Cosmopol is Sweden's largest international casino, located at Kungsträdgården 8 in a stunning 1890s Art Nouveau building that was once a ballroom and theater. It's one of four state-owned Casino Cosmopol properties (Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Sundsvall).
Age: 20+ (higher than most of Europe). Entry: Free with valid photo ID (passport, EU national ID, or Swedish driver's license). Dress code: Smart casual; no sportswear, shorts, or sandals after 7pm. The casino has table games (blackjack, roulette, punto banco, poker), a dedicated poker room, and slot machines. Restaurants and bars are on-site.
Sweden has no commercial casinos — Casino Cosmopol is a state monopoly, with profits directed to the public treasury. This makes it one of the more tightly regulated casino environments in Europe.
Travel Tips
- Age matters: The casino age limit is 20, higher than the 18 applied to alcohol purchase. Bring ID — it will be checked.
- Get an SL Access card or app. Stockholm's public transit (metro, buses, trams, ferries) is excellent. The SL app lets you buy tickets on your phone. A 24-hour pass covers everything.
- Stockholm is expensive. Along with Oslo and Copenhagen, it's one of Europe's priciest capitals. Budget accordingly — a beer can cost €8–10, a simple dinner €30+.
- Cashless: Sweden is nearly cashless. Many shops and restaurants refuse cash entirely. Cards and mobile payments (often Swish, the local app) work everywhere.
- Summer vs. winter: Summer (June–August) has long days (18+ hours of daylight) and warm weather. Winter (December–February) has very short days (6 hours of daylight in December) but is beautiful with snow and Christmas markets.
- Free attraction: The changing of the guard at the Royal Palace (daily at 12:15pm, Sundays 1pm) is free to watch.
- Walk or use ferries: Central Stockholm is walkable. Ferries connect the islands (Djurgården, Skeppsholmen) and are part of the transit system.
- Fika: The Swedish coffee break tradition. Pause for coffee and a cinnamon bun (kanelbulle) at 10am and 3pm — it's a cultural institution.
Beyond the Casino
- Gamla Stan (Old Town) — The medieval heart of Stockholm on an island. Cobblestone streets, the Royal Palace, Storkyrkan Cathedral, and the Nobel Museum. Allow a half-day.
- Vasa Museum — The world's only preserved 17th-century warship, raised from Stockholm harbor in 1961. One of Scandinavia's most visited museums. Essential.
- ABBA The Museum — Interactive museum dedicated to Sweden's most famous pop export. On Djurgården island.
- Skansen Open-Air Museum — The world's oldest open-air museum, with historic Swedish buildings and a zoo with Nordic animals (brown bears, wolves, lynx, moose). On Djurgården.
- Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet) — One of Europe's largest palaces still in use. State Apartments, the Treasury, and the Royal Armory. Changing of the guard daily.
- Fotografiska — Renowned photography museum in a converted industrial building. Excellent restaurant with harbor views.
- Moderna Museet — Museum of modern art on Skeppsholmen island. Works by Picasso, Dalí, Matisse, and Swedish artists.
- Djurgården island — A green island park with museums, walking paths, and cafés. Rent a bike and explore.
- Stockholm Archipelago (Skärgården) — 30,000 islands and rocky islets stretching east into the Baltic. Day trips by ferry to Vaxholm, Sandhamn, or Grinda are a highlight.
- Drottningholm Palace — The Royal Family's residence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 45 minutes by boat from the city. The court theater (1766) is still used for opera.
