Travel Tips
- Safari is the draw. Pilanesberg National Park is adjacent and offers genuine Big Five game viewing (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo) without the crowds or prices of Kruger. Book game drives through the hotel or Pilanesberg operators.
- Self-drive or shuttle: Most visitors rent a car in Johannesburg. Roads are good and the drive is straightforward. Shuttles and transfers are available but expensive.
- Malaria-free zone: Unlike Kruger, Pilanesberg is malaria-free — no prophylaxis needed. This makes it popular with families.
- Book game drives in advance. Especially in peak season (July–August). Sunrise and sunset drives are best for wildlife.
- Currency: South African Rand. Sun City is expensive by South African standards but affordable in USD/EUR terms. ATMs on site.
- Valley of Waves: The water park is included for Palace and Cascades guests; day passes available for others. Great for families, with a wave pool, slides, and a lazy river.
- Two golf courses: The Gary Player Country Club (home of the Nedbank Golf Challenge) and the Lost City Golf Course. Both are world-class; book well in advance.
- Safety: Sun City is a gated, secure resort. Exercise normal urban caution in Johannesburg before/after your visit.

- The Gary Player Golf Course — Ranked among the world's top 100 courses. The 18th hole is one of the longest par-4s in tournament golf.
- Lost City Golf Course — Features a water hazard on the 13th hole that is home to live crocodiles.
- Zip 2000 — One of the world's longest and fastest zip lines, located near Sun City. 2km long, speeds up to 120 km/h.
- Cultural village tours — Ledangan Cultural Village and other local communities offer guided visits to learn about local traditions and crafts.
- Elephant interactions — The Elephant Wishes sanctuary offers ethical elephant encounters (no riding). Book in advance.
- Day trip to Madikwe — Another premier game reserve about 90 minutes away, known for wild dog and luxury lodges.
Practical Information
Sun City was developed by South African hotelier Sol Kerzner in 1979 in the former Bophuthatswana homeland, where gambling was legal under apartheid-era laws. Today it remains South Africa's most famous resort complex, though it competes with newer properties like Montecasino (Johannesburg) and the Boardwalk (Gqeberha).
The resort is large — allow time to walk between hotels, the casino, water park, and entertainment center. A free shuttle circulates within the complex.
